Stock market live today: Rupee hits fresh all-time low, settles 4 paise lower at 83.87 against dollar

The rupee depreciated by 4 paise to settle at an all-time low of 84.87 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday, dragged down by negative domestic equity markets, outflow of foreign funds and rise in crude oil prices.

Forex traders said investors were awaiting cues from domestic inflation data to be released later in the day even as an elevated dollar index weighed on the Indian currency.

India’s edible oil imports increased by 38 per cent in the first month of the oil year 2024-25 (November-October) due a significant rise in imports of RBD palmolein, crude sunflower oil and soyabean oil. According to the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India, India imported 15.90 lakh tonnes (lt) of edible oils in November of the oil year 2024-25 against 11.48 lt in the corresponding period of the oil year 2023-24.

The rupee fell 2 paise to near all-time low of 84.85 against the US dollar in early trade on Thursday, on the back of foreign fund outflows and rising crude oil prices.

An elevated dollar index and muted domestic equity markets weighed on the Indian currency even as investors were awaiting cues from domestic inflation data to be released later in the day, forex traders said.

Commodities market live today: Crude oil futures gain slightly amid supply risk concerns

Crude oil futures traded marginally higher on Thursday morning due to the concerns over supply risks driven by sanctions in the coming days. At 9.27 am on Thursday, February Brent oil futures were at $73.58, up by 0.08 per cent, and January crude oil futures on WTI (West Texas Intermediate) were at $70.28, down by 0.01 per cent. December crude oil futures were trading at ₹5965 on Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) during the initial hour of trading on Thursday against the previous close of ₹5934, up by 0.52 per cent, and January futures were trading at ₹5955 against the previous close of ₹5929, up by 0.44 per cent.

Gold surged past $2700 in yesterday’s session after inflation print came in slightly mixed, however, market participants continued to discount one more rate cut in December’s Fed meeting supporting bullions. The U.S. consumer prices rose 0.3% on a monthly basis in November, data from the Labor Department showed. Annually, it climbed 2.7% after increasing 2.6% in October however, the Core inflation was reported in-line with expectations. Market participants see a 95% chance of one more 25-basis-point cut at the Fed’s Dec. 17-18 meeting, compared with an about 86% chance seen before the inflation report, CME’s FedWatch Tool showed. Distress is also rising amidst geo-political tensions especially in Middle East with Syria also now in picture. Rebel forces took Syria’s capital Damascus ending the reign of President Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia. China’s central bank increasing their Gold reserve once again has also supported sentiment. Any change in rate cut expectations could increase volatility in prices.
